Brill — Independent Access For The Visually Impaired
Due to the challenges blind individuals face when navigating the internet and reading text — and the lack of privacy in existing assistive devices — we created Brill: a solution designed for blind users, rehabilitation centers, and people with visual impairments. Brill enables Arabic web browsing through real-time text-to-Braille conversion over Bluetooth, paired with smart glasses that capture and translate text from the world around the user.
The Problem
Blind and visually impaired individuals face significant barriers when accessing digital content and printed text — especially in Arabic. Existing assistive devices are often expensive, bulky, or rely solely on audio output, which compromises privacy. Many tools simply don't support Arabic well, leaving users underserved in education, work, and daily life.
The Solution
Brill is a compact, affordable, privacy-first device that combines a Braille display with smart camera-equipped glasses. Together, they let blind users browse the Arabic internet, read printed materials, and interact with their surroundings independently — wirelessly and discreetly.
How It Works
The Brill device pairs over Bluetooth to convert Arabic web pages and digital text into refreshable Braille. The companion smart glasses use an integrated camera to analyze any text in view — signs, menus, books, documents — convert it into Braille on the device, and optionally read it aloud. The user-friendly interface and wireless design make Brill simple to use anywhere.
